Daily Devotional for a Healthy Lifestyle

Daily Devotions for a Healthy Lifestyle is designed for anyone, but has an emphasis for those attempting to lose weight, gain weight, overcome an eating disorder, or that just wants to eat healthily. The cover of the book on this site is a republish of the original book with minor changes in just a few of the nutrition notes. The front and back covers are completely different. The big difference is this version is much more affordable. The book includes a Scripture quotation, a discussion of the Scripture, a prayer, and a brief nutrition discussion. Each day the nutrition discussion builds on the previous day's discussion.

Why Read This Book?

These days it is difficult to keep up with what is truly healthy eating because the media is flooded with nutritional information, much of which is bogus or is an attempt at selling a certain product or diet. I hope to enlighten my readers with my observations after 45 years of personal experience concerning nutrition practices. There are too many false or misleading teachings that keep the public confused. I am not a nutritional guru that can explain every facet of nutrition in a way that everyone can understand, but my education (Ph.D. in nutrition), over 37 years of teaching college and my research experience, along with clinical practice as a registered dietitian (45 years as a registered dietitian) can be used to enlighten some of the areas in which I have expertise.

I see nutrition in two dimensions. The first dimension, the one that all of you are familiar with, is the food that we consume to nourish our bodies. This is the dimension where I have years of college training, teaching, and clinical experience. The second dimension of nutrition is nutrition not for the body, but for the spirit. Hopefully, we feed our bodies on a regular basis every day. We know that to keep them healthy we must feed them wholesome food which contains all of the nutrients necessary for a healthy existence. In time, through these blogs and future books I am in the process of writing, you will come to understand (if you do not already) that we are a three-part being, consisting of a spirit, a soul, and a body. This is scriptural: “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NASB).

It is important to not only have a healthy body but also to have a healthy spirit. If we are weak and poor in our spirit, it will show up in a weak and unhealthy body. We all know that we need to eat every day to have a healthy body, but how many of us take in spiritual food every day to keep our spirit man healthy? I believe most of us would agree that we do not feed our spirit man every day, or at least as much as we should. Thus, my blogs will be related to physical nutrition and spiritual nutrition. Over my 45 years of being a born-again Spirit-filled Christian, I used my knowledge of research to study the Scriptures in great depth. I also taught as a lay teacher in churches, Sunday school, and home groups and I am a volunteer Chaplin for our local jail.

More About this book

During my 45 years of being a registered dietitian, and over 45 years of being a born-again Christian, I have had numerous opportunities to counsel people on weight reduction, weight gain, eating disorders, sports nutrition, and just everyday healthy eating. These opportunities were in both secular settings and in Christian settings. In the secular world, I did not have the freedom to introduce Jesus Christ or prayer into the counseling formula. Of course, in Christian settings, I did have the opportunity and used that opportunity as often as possible. I have noticed I had much greater success in Christian settings. Losing weight, overcoming eating disorders, gaining weight, and eating healthy requires a great deal of discipline and encouragement. I realized there was a need for a good devotional that could provide just that. By adding a significant prayer and nutritional advice to each day, this devotional was born. While it took years in the making, I believe it can help those needing encouragement in their endeavors to have a healthy lifestyle.
